What is courageous advocacy?

Courageous advocacy is defined by the Church of England as “the act of speaking out against an issue of injustice, often on behalf of those whose voice is not heard". At St. Aidan's we inspire our children to become courageous advocates for positive change, both locally and globally. We teach them the importance of helping others, regardless of their circumstances, through our focus on values, biblical teachings, and the study of other faiths and worldviews. We encourage them to engage in critical thinking, challenge injustice, and actively participate in creating a better world.  Our Christian values called ' Values in Practice' (V.I.P) of Acceptance, Love, Wisdom, Accountability, Youthfulness, and Service guide our actions and shape a world where everyone can live well together.

St Aidan's is a vibrant Christian community where everyone feels valued and supported. All our pupils are unique individuals and our main priority is to develop the full potential of each and every child in our school. This underpins the positive ethos we foster, stated in our vision and mission statement:

 ‘Fulfilling potential, growing in God'

Through collective worship, RE lessons, and moments of reflection, we explore the Bible to strengthen our understanding of Christian values and their relevance to our lives. We seek to inspire children to follow the example of Jesus by demonstrating courage, hope, service, and love. By examining biblical principles together, we create a supportive community that encourages personal growth and a commitment to serving others.

Jesus taught us the importance of standing up for those who are marginalised or ignored. We encourage children to reflect on his example and develop their own sense of justice and compassion. Through PSHE lessons, character education, and learning about British values, we aim to equip them with the knowledge and skills to become active citizens who speak up for others and contribute positively to their community.

Speak up for those who cannot speak for themselves, for the rights of all who are destitute. Speak up and judge fairly; defend the rights of the poor and needy. - Proverbs 31: 8-9

In recent years we have carried out fundraising to raise awareness of issues and support those working for change, including:

  • Sports relief
  • Comic Relief
  • Children in Need
  • Royal British Legion
  • St Catherine's Hospice

We want our children to develop a strong sense of community and a commitment to making a positive impact on the world. We aim to inspire them to connect with and care for their local and global communities, taking action to improve the lives of others.

  • Links with The Billy Project and care homes
  • School Council, providing a platform for students to express their views, concerns, and suggestions
  • School newsletters and social media supports local events and community information sharing
  • Mini Police scheme, run by neighbourhood officers, sees children engage in activities to build a strong relationship between young people and the police
  • St. Aidan's Ambassadors - They kindly volunteer, in their own time after school, to make a difference by helping our local community

Our enthusiastic Mini Police team played a crucial role in improving parking safety and efficiency outside our school, contributing to a more positive and welcoming atmosphere

St. Aidan's Ambassadors made a positive impact on our community by volunteering their time to clean up local area. Their efforts helped to create a cleaner, safer, and more enjoyable environment for everyone.
